"Penny can be a metaphor for a person you really care about. Penny could also be a metaphor for music. When you listen to music, or certain songs, you remember certain things you've experienced because it takes you back to that time . . . music then becomes the soundtrack of your life." ~ Taylor Hanson on what Penny (from the single 'Penny & Me') represents

Bits and Pieces
During the Hanson chat on March 28th 2004 at hanson.net, Hanson said that "All over the world we'll be adding different songs to the album when we release it there to make it different for every place". This can already be seen in the difference between the Japanese release of Underneath, the US version and the French version. On the Japanese album 'Dream Girl' appears instead of 'Get Up and Go', which is on the US version. Japan also received a bonus track - 'I Almost Care'. The French version includes the bonus track - 'Someone (Laissons nous une chance)'.
In this MTV.com article they mention that the album will be called "Underneath" and that 'Deeper' with Michelle Branch singing vocals, will appear on the album.
Hanson will debuted their new single "Hey" on Sabrina. According to Zapit.com tv news, this is how Hanson are introduced on the show: Pop group Hanson will also appear in the episode and play a song from the band's forthcoming CD. Isaac Hanson plays the ex-boyfriend of Roxie (Soleil Moon Frye), surprising her with an impromptu song with his brothers at a soup kitchen where Roxie does volunteer work. Hanson produced a handful of tracks with produce Bob Marlette (who has worked with Tracy Chapmanand Marilyn Manson), Stephen Lironi (worked with Hanson on the last two albums) and engineer Steve Churchyard (who has worked with the Counting Crows and the Pretenders). Hanson are set to work with Glen Ballard (who has worked with Alanis Morissette and Dave Matthews) during the next few weeks. Hanson plan on taking nearly forty songs into the studio. Expect fewer loops and less scratching on this record. Hanson are documenting and self-directing a documentary about the making of their new album as well as focusing on life as a Hanson in general. It's called "Your Illusion". "It's a documentary of the album-making process and a sortof the whole gauntlet of things that go on. From the beginning of an album to the end. "We wanna take it to Sundance, see if we can get it into the festivals." ~ Taylor Sonically, expect the new Hanson album to be slightly less rambunctious than This Time Around or the band's 1997 debut, Middle of Nowhere. "The last record was a great step for the industry to go, 'OK They made a second recordand it wasn't crappy,' But for me, this record is the final statement. I'm totally psyched. As an artist that's doing music, I'm more pumped about what weare doing now then anything we have ever done." ~ Taylor
"One thing about our records, you can't listen to the Hanson albums and relax. I'm super-proud of them, but they're not the kind of records you put on to chill out to. I think elements of the record really need to have that -- where you can put it on and play it as background music at a party, or play the record through and have it be in your face and rock your world. But there is a sense of mellowness that we never really touched on." ~ Taylor "There's more reckless abandon on this record" ~ Taylor "I think people will be surprised by the amount of rhythmic variety on this record."~ Isaac "You want to be able to sell records, you want to go out and play to a lot of fans. But the natural process of writing songs and feeling good about them has to outweigh that." ~ Taylor "Each one of these songs seems to have a relatively unique feel to it" ~ Isaac "I think everybody -- the band, the label -- is looking towards the goal of having that song that makes people go out and buy your record." ~ Taylor "It was scary." ~ Zac on working with Carole King "We'll do it purely based on what the best songs are. There are songs especially when you're doing collaborations, where you go, 'That is cool but it sounds nothing like us'" ~ Taylor on what songs will make the album cut.
